Your guide to exploring Lineage

Instruction manual

Explore history at your own pace. Move through the years, look closely at the timeline artwork, and open event markers to discover the stories behind them.

Start exploring in three steps

  1. Open the timeline and choose a period using the bottom year navigator.
  2. Drag or swipe to explore. Open the Refine Tool to adjust the zoom.
  3. Select an event marker to read its story, or open Chronicle Details for context.

1. Move through the timeline

On a computer, click and drag an empty area of the timeline. Drag left to move forward in time, or right to explore earlier years. On a phone or tablet, swipe in the same directions.

Drag or swipe up and down to explore different parts of the artwork. A mouse wheel scrolls vertically; a horizontal trackpad gesture moves through the years. Start a new gesture when you want to change direction.

2. Jump to a period

Use the year navigator along the bottom to travel across 8600 B.C. to 4500 A.D.. Click or tap a position on the bar, or drag along it to choose a period.

The dates above the bar show the range currently in view. The outlined window indicates how much of the full timeline you are seeing. Zooming in makes this window smaller; zooming out shows more years.

BC dates count down as you move toward AD. The BC / AD heading follows the start of your visible range, while the “Age of” label follows its midpoint. Select the BC / AD heading to return to the Lineage home page.

3. Adjust your view

Select the sliders icon to open the Refine Tool. Move ZOOM SCALE to the right for a closer view, or to the left to see a wider period. Use UP/DOWN ALIGN to bring another part of the artwork into view.

Turn SEARCH ICONS on to show clickable event markers. Turn it off to read the timeline artwork without the markers and dark overlay. This switch controls marker visibility.

Close the Refine Tool with the arrow in its top corner when you have finished adjusting the view. Use the down/up chevron in the top toolbar to hide or show the bottom year navigator.

4. Explore events and chronicles

Click or tap an event marker or its title to open its detail panel. Read the date, location, summary, and any additional sections. Where sources are provided, their links open in a new tab. Use the X to close the panel.

Select the book icon to open or hide Chronicle Details. This panel provides context for the 200-year window containing the start of your view and updates as you move between periods. Its Temporal Focus date may differ from the exact starting year shown in the navigator.

If you cannot see any markers, check that SEARCH ICONS is on, then try another period or zoom out. Event markers appear only for events within the visible year range.

5. Use the timeline on mobile

Tap the menu button in the top-right corner to open the Refine Tool, show or hide the year navigator, open Chronicle Details, or return to these instructions.

The + and − buttons on the right zoom in and out. The up and down arrows adjust the vertical view. You can also swipe directly on the timeline artwork.

Close Chronicle Details using its top arrow or by tapping the shaded area outside it. Hide the year navigator when you want more room to explore.
